How Do You Eat Your Corn On The Cob

August 27th, 2010

Corn on the CobThis is an interesting subject that I have always thought about and since nothing says summer more than corn on the cob I want to know what you think.

So let’s set the scene.  You are sitting at the table and there is the corn on the plate.  Everyone picks it up and some sort of thought process has already occurred.  What did they determine was the best way to eat this sweet buttery goodness?

Here are the different choices we have:

  1. Start on one side or the other and eat a complete circle around the cob until you are back where you started.  Then move over and repeat.
  2. Start in the middle and eat like above.
  3. Start in the middle and eat out to one side.  Then return to the middle and repeat.  Once one side is done you then repeat on the other side.
  4. Start from one side or the other and eat across until you reach the other side, but here is where an interesting thing happens.  Some will then reverse by eating from that side back across to the starting side while others will eat across and then return back across to the same side like a typewriter before continuing.
  5. Then you have the random eater.  They just pick a spot with no real rhyme or reason.  Kinda like a woodpecker.

I certainly think there is something to be said for how we each decide which of these options suits us best.  It says something about how we think.  Are you analytical, clean, artistic, etc.?  Next time you are eating corn on the cob take a look around and you will notice many different choices.  It’s also a funny subject to bring up while at the table.  Give it a try.

What are your thoughts on the subject and how do you eat your corn on the cob?

I myself am a right side circle eater.

Weeknight Out In Washington, D.C.

January 28th, 2009

Last night a crew of us left Richmond and drove to D.C.  to attend a Thievery Corporation concert at the 9:30 Club.  It actually felt like winter.  As we headed more north the snow got consistently harder.   Once we got to D.C. we headed to Local 16 for happy hour on U and 16th.  Local 16 is owned by Thievery Corporation so it made since to make a visit.  It’s much more of a 10pm and after place with a wide open dance floor, and a huge outside patio upstairs and dim light bar and booths downstairs.  When it’s nice go there late night and you will not be disappointed.

We left Local 16 and headed to Gus’s Next Door on U and 12th for dinner.  It is directly next to Gus’s Chili Bowl which has been around for 50 years.  The Executive Chef is non other than Rock Harper from last years Hell’s Kitchen.  He took the winning prize of a one year $250,00 salary to run the Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas, but when that ended he decided to return home.   The decor was nice, the food was just ok, but it has only been open a few weeks so it’s always best to be understanding in those circumstances.  The Duck and the Mac and Cheese were both very good though.

Once we were finished with dinner we headed to the 9:30 Club on V and 8th to see Thievery Corporation.  If you have never seen them live I highly recommend getting on their mailing list so you know when they play again.  Tuesday night was the first night of a five night gig at the 9:30 Club.  They usually play every year around Decmeber or January so keep that in mind.  Oh yea, tickets always sell out very fast so you must be quick.  Their shows are always enjoyable, but as a long time Thievery fan and someone who has now been to four shows (’06, ’07, ’08, ’09), nothing really compares to their first show.  Maybe it’s the first time newness of their style and vibe, but it just wan’t the same.   The new comers to the group thought it was amazing and were smiling ear to ear so that should tell you somehthing.

All and all this was a great trip to D.C. with a great group of friends.

To go to the grocery store or not?

January 25th, 2009

That is the question.

So I know there are times when we all need to go to the store and just really don’t want to.  Enter Supercook.  This site is a recipe search engine that finds recipes you can make with the ingredients you have at home.  You just have to tell it what you have on hand and it will give you all kind of recipes options.  Seriously!  How cool is that.

I tend to play the game what can I make with what I have in my pantry.  You know when you can’t make a PB&J that you need to go to the store, but with this website the game can continue.

Cooktime – A Simple Countdown Timer

January 25th, 2009

If  you are on your computer all the time like I am then this little tool might be helpful to you.  Let’s set the stage.  You put your food in the oven, set the oven timer, but then go into your office to do some work.  Unfortunately you start listening to music or just don’t hear the timer go off.  Your timer then becomes the smoke alarm.  That’s no good.

With Cooktime you can choose from 4 presets times or make a custom timer.  You won’t burn you food anymore.  If you still do then I really can’t help you.
