I saw Snoop Dogg for the first time last night and I must say that dude is a performer. I have seen a fair amount of other rap concerts and most of them don’t live up to expectations because rap is so produced with all the beats and sound effects that it usually doesn’t sound nearly as good. Snoop on the other hand just had so much energy and he kept the crowd into every song. VIP tickets thanks to my boy Ryan Moretti of Southern Wine & Spirits didn’t hurt either. If you get the chance to see Snoop D-o-double-g do it.

This evening Michelle, Brian, Lillian and I made the trip to Charlottesville, VA to see Thievery Corporation on their Radio Retaliation tour. It was pretty much the same show as we saw at the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C., in January, but as always it’s still worth the time and money.
If you want to see them they are playing again this January 21-23 at the 9:30 Club. All shows are already sold out but I’m sure you can get a ticket if you really want to go.

I came across a standalone utility called Last.fm Music Downloader. As a member of Last.fm since June 2006 this little app is very useful for me. If you didn’t read my earlier post about Last.fm take a look.
- Download and run the app.
- Go to Last.fm and visit the Radio page.
- Search by artist, genera or keyword to begin listening to music.
- Take the url and paste it into Last.fm Music Downloader and hit Start.
- Music will begin to downolad to the default location setup in the app.
That’s it! Who knows how long this will last though before Last.fm figures out a way to block this so get it while you can.

The South by Southwest (SXSW) music festival is one of the largest and most popular in the United States. For the fifth year in a row, SXSW has released a DRM-free, RIAA-safe collection of songs totaling 6 GB, which can all be downloaded for free, thanks to BitTorrent.

Last night a crew of us left Richmond and drove to D.C. to attend a Thievery Corporation concert at the 9:30 Club. It actually felt like winter. As we headed more north the snow got consistently harder. Once we got to D.C. we headed to Local 16 for happy hour on U and 16th. Local 16 is owned by Thievery Corporation so it made since to make a visit. It’s much more of a 10pm and after place with a wide open dance floor, and a huge outside patio upstairs and dim light bar and booths downstairs. When it’s nice go there late night and you will not be disappointed.
We left Local 16 and headed to Gus’s Next Door on U and 12th for dinner. It is directly next to Gus’s Chili Bowl which has been around for 50 years. The Executive Chef is non other than Rock Harper from last years Hell’s Kitchen. He took the winning prize of a one year $250,00 salary to run the Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas, but when that ended he decided to return home. The decor was nice, the food was just ok, but it has only been open a few weeks so it’s always best to be understanding in those circumstances. The Duck and the Mac and Cheese were both very good though.
Once we were finished with dinner we headed to the 9:30 Club on V and 8th to see Thievery Corporation. If you have never seen them live I highly recommend getting on their mailing list so you know when they play again. Tuesday night was the first night of a five night gig at the 9:30 Club. They usually play every year around Decmeber or January so keep that in mind. Oh yea, tickets always sell out very fast so you must be quick. Their shows are always enjoyable, but as a long time Thievery fan and someone who has now been to four shows (‘06, ‘07, ‘08, ‘09), nothing really compares to their first show. Maybe it’s the first time newness of their style and vibe, but it just wan’t the same. The new comers to the group thought it was amazing and were smiling ear to ear so that should tell you somehthing.
All and all this was a great trip to D.C. with a great group of friends.

I have used Liveplasma (formerly Music Plasma) for many years. It is a website that allows you to put in a artist/band, movie, director or actor and it will then recommend closely related options. It’s a quick and simple way to find new artist or movies. Check it out.

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — Apple Inc. on Tuesday made its last appearance at the annual Macworld conference, releasing a new version of its MacBook Pro notebook and announcing pricing and copy protection changes for songs available on its iTunes store. Apple senior vice president of marketing Phil Schiller delivered the conference’s keynote address in place of Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs, who earlier this week disclosed that he’s been suffering from a hormone imbalance. Apple, which traditionally uses the conference to announce its most high-profile products, said songs on iTunes will begin costing between 69 cents and $1.29 in April, based on their popularity. In addition, the company said all songs will be free of copy protections by the end of the quarter.
What this means to you
- You will be able to share music with friends, YES!
- Lesser known artists songs will be cheaper than more popular artists saving you some $

What music program do you like the best?
I have been using both programs for years now, but if you haven’t checked out last.fm you really need to. This program does everything Pandora does, however it can be downloaded as a standalone app that runs in your system tray. If also has some nice plug-ins to monitor your music coming out of itunes, Windows Media Player, Winamp, ect. Then it automatically synchronizes what you are listening to up to your profile on last.fm for the world and friends to see. It’s a social networking music site. You can also have it scrobble (aka look for new songs since your last sync) music from your ipod. It’s a really great program.
